Asbestos Training Is a Legal Requirement — Not a Nice-to-Have

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012), Regulation 10 places a clear legal duty on every employer: anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos during their work must receive appropriate information, instruction and training.

With over 1.8 million buildings in the UK still believed to contain asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), the risk is real for anyone working in construction, maintenance, facilities management or property management.

Failing to provide training leaves employers exposed to HSE enforcement, unlimited fines and criminal prosecution — and puts workers at risk of mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer, often decades after exposure.

The essential starting point. Required under CAR 2012 for anyone whose work could foreseeably disturb asbestos-containing materials. Covers the health risks, how to identify ACMs, safe working practices and what to do in an emergency. Does not authorise delegates to work with asbestos — that requires the Non-Licensed course.

Is Your Role Covered by CAR 2012?

If you work in or around buildings constructed before 2000, you almost certainly need asbestos training. Here are the most common roles we train — and the courses that apply to each.

Landlords & Property Owners

Non-domestic landlords have a legal duty under CAR 2012 Reg 4 to manage asbestos in their properties. Domestic landlords with maintenance responsibilities are also at risk.

Duty to Manage

Facilities & Building Managers

Anyone responsible for maintaining or managing a building built before 2000 must understand their duty-to-manage obligations and how to implement a compliant management plan.

Duty to Manage

Electricians & Plumbers

Trades working in older properties are among the most at-risk professions. Awareness training is the legal minimum — Non-Licensed Works training is required if ACMs will be knowingly disturbed.

Awareness / Non-Licensed

Construction & Demolition Workers

Pre-demolition and refurbishment surveys are mandatory under CAR 2012 — and all operatives disturbing materials must hold appropriate training certificates before work begins.

Awareness / Non-Licensed

School & University Estates Teams

Educational buildings are often pre-2000 and carry a high asbestos burden. Duty holder training is essential for all estates and facilities staff with maintenance responsibilities.

Awareness / Duty to Manage

Housing Associations & Councils

With large pre-2000 housing stocks to manage, housing organisations must ensure all relevant staff — from housing officers to contractors — are appropriately trained and certified.

Yes. Under CAR 2012 Regulation 10, every employer must ensure that adequate information, instruction and training is given to employees who are or who are liable to be exposed to asbestos, or who supervise such employees. Failure to comply can result in HSE enforcement action, unlimited fines and, in serious cases, criminal prosecution.
Asbestos Awareness training is designed for workers whose activities may accidentally disturb asbestos — such as a plumber who might drill through a wall. It does not authorise anyone to work with asbestos. The Non-Licensed Works course is for operatives who will knowingly disturb lower-risk ACMs as part of their work — and includes practical training in safe work methods, PPE and decontamination.
It depends on the course. Asbestos Awareness takes approximately 2–4 hours (half day). Duty to Manage overview takes half a day, and the full Duty Holder course takes a full day. The Non-Licensed Works course is 1 to 1.5 days, including practical sessions. Bespoke and refresher training durations are agreed at the time of booking.
Yes — the Duty to Manage and Non-Licensed Works courses both require delegates to hold a valid UKATA Asbestos Awareness certificate dated within the last 6 months. If your certificate has expired, you will need to complete a fresh Awareness course before attending. We can arrange both courses back-to-back on the same day.
All UKATA certificates are valid for 12 months from the date of issue. Annual refresher training is required to maintain certification. We recommend booking refreshers in advance to avoid any lapse in compliance — we can help you manage this for your whole team.
Absolutely. Onsite training is one of our most popular options — especially for teams of 4 or more delegates. We travel across England and Wales to deliver training at your premises, which minimises disruption and travel costs for your workforce. Sessions can accommodate up to 15 delegates.
Yes. All attendees receive their UKATA-approved digital certificate of attendance on the same day as training. Physical certificates can be posted on request. Certificates are valid for 12 months and recognised by employers, principal contractors and HSE inspectors across the UK.
Yes. Beyond the core UKATA syllabus, we can tailor additional content to your specific industry, property type or workforce role. For example, we offer adapted modules for housing associations, schools, healthcare estates and demolition contractors. Contact us to discuss your requirements.
Pricing depends on the course type, number of delegates, delivery method and your location. We aim to offer very competitive rates — particularly for onsite group bookings. Contact us for a no-obligation quote. We typically respond the same working day.
