Asbestos was widely used in corrugated roofing sheets, soffits, boarding and external cladding panels across commercial, industrial, agricultural and domestic buildings for decades. The material was favoured for its strength, durability and fire-resistant properties — but as these structures age, weathering, cracking and breakage can lead to fibre release, posing a significant health risk if not handled correctly.

While many roofing products are made from asbestos cement, some flat profile sheets and soffit boards may instead be Asbestos Insulating Board (AIB). AIB contains a much higher concentration of asbestos fibres and is classed as a high-risk material. Identification cannot be made visually — sampling and analysis by a competent asbestos surveyor is essential.

If AIB is present, removal in most cases must only be carried out by a HSE Licensed Asbestos Removal Contractor, such as AIB Solutions.
