Why asbestos is so common in the Potteries
Stoke-on-Trent grew around the pottery, coal and steel industries, and its buildings reflect it. Former pot banks and factories, Victorian terraces in Burslem, Hanley and Longton, large inter-war and post-war council estates, and 1960s–70s private housing all date from the years when asbestos was used widely.
