Textured decorative coatings such as Artex were commonly applied to ceilings and walls across the UK, particularly from the 1960s through to the early 1990s. Many coatings installed before 1992 can contain small amounts of asbestos fibres, added to improve strength, durability and flexibility.
These materials are still frequently uncovered during refurbishments, re-skimming works, ceiling replacements, lighting upgrades or general property renovations. While textured coatings are typically classed as a lower-risk asbestos material when intact, they can release fibres if scraped, sanded, drilled, broken up, or removed incorrectly.
