Project Overview
AIB Solutions was privileged to be selected to undertake specialist enabling and environmental cleaning works at Chatterley Whitfield Colliery, Staffordshire.
Located in Stoke-on-Trent, Chatterley Whitfield is widely acknowledged as the most comprehensive surviving deep mine site in England. It is Britain’s largest remaining colliery site and has been designated by Historic England as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Due to its historical importance and industrial legacy, this project required a careful, conservation-aware and fully compliant approach. As a trusted provider of Asbestos Removal in Staffordshire, and regularly delivering Asbestos Removal in Stoke-on-Trent, our team was well positioned to support works at this significant heritage site.
Scope of Works
Our enabling works included:
- Vegetation and foliage clearance to create safe access routes
- Removal of substantial pigeon guano accumulations
- Environmental cleaning of asbestos cement debris
- Environmental cleaning of asbestos insulating board (AIB) debris
- Controlled segregation and compliant disposal of hazardous waste
The combination of heritage sensitivity, environmental contamination and restricted access required detailed planning and experienced asbestos operatives.
Managing Asbestos Risks on a Historic Industrial Site
Multiple areas across the site contained fragmented asbestos materials, including asbestos cement and asbestos insulating board (AIB).
While asbestos cement is generally lower risk when intact, broken or degraded debris can present exposure concerns. AIB, being a higher-risk material, requires stricter control measures and specialist handling.

Projects like this demonstrate the importance of working with an experienced contractor when dealing with complex industrial environments. Whether supporting redevelopment or stabilisation works, professional asbestos management is essential.
Biological & Environmental Cleaning
Significant accumulations of pigeon guano presented additional respiratory and contamination risks. Our team implemented controlled cleaning procedures to remove biological hazards while maintaining strict site safety protocols.
This type of enabling work is frequently required on long-abandoned industrial sites across the region, particularly where asbestos-containing materials may also be present.
