AIB garage ceiling removal using a direct connection
Back to our bread and butter. A licensed asbestos insulating board ceiling removed from a domestic garage in Wales, with the decontamination unit connected straight to the enclosure.
The project
Another successful project completed by the AIB Solutions team, this time over in Wales. The job was the safe removal and disposal of an asbestos insulating board (AIB) garage ceiling — the kind of work our team knows inside out.
AIB was used widely in garages, utility rooms and boiler cupboards from the 1950s to the 1980s. Because it releases fibres readily when it's damaged, its removal is licensed work under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. All works were carried out under fully controlled conditions, and the team left the garage absolutely spotless once the removal and cleaning were complete.

For this project, a direct connection was installed and used, following HSE guidance on minimising the risks of asbestos removal.
On many licensed jobs, the decontamination unit sits a short distance from the enclosure, and operatives walk between the two along an external transit route. A direct connection joins the decontamination unit straight onto the enclosure, so operatives move between the work area and the decontamination facilities without ever entering an uncontrolled area.
That significantly reduces the potential for asbestos fibres to spread outside the controlled zone, minimises the risk of human error, and gives an additional level of protection to everyone on site — the team, the homeowner and the neighbours.
Enclosure, airlock and bag lock — no external transit route needed. At AIB Solutions, we believe in doing things properly: investing in the right setup and keeping the highest safety standards on every project, whatever its size. Once the ceiling was down and the area cleaned, the garage went through independent four-stage clearance before it was handed back.

Cleaned and handed back. Not just England
Most of our work is within around 30 miles of our base in Newcastle-under-Lyme, across Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire. But as this job shows, we regularly take on projects further afield, across England, Wales and the rest of the UK. Whether it's a small domestic garage ceiling or a large commercial removal project, our team is ready to help.
We've done a very similar job closer to home — our domestic garage AIB case study walks through the process from first phone call to clearance.
Found a board in your garage ceiling?
Don't drill it, break it or pull it down. If you're not sure what it is, a simple test settles it: we take a sample and send it to a UKAS-accredited laboratory. For bigger works, an asbestos survey arranged through our trusted surveying partners is the right place to start, and our domestic cost guide shows real price ranges.
Frequently asked questions
What is a direct connection in asbestos removal?
It's when the decontamination unit is joined directly to the enclosure's airlock, so operatives move from the work area into decontamination without passing through an uncontrolled area. It removes the need for an external transit route.
Is a direct connection always possible?
Not always. It depends on space, access and where the enclosure is. Where it isn't practicable, a carefully controlled transit route is used instead. We plan for a direct connection wherever the site allows.
Do I need a licensed contractor to remove an AIB garage ceiling?
Yes. AIB removal is notifiable licensed work under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. How to check a contractor is licensed.
How long does it take?
On-site work for a garage ceiling is typically one to two days, after the HSE notification period of at least 14 days.
Do you work outside Staffordshire and Cheshire?
Yes. Most of our work is local, but we take on projects across England, Wales and the rest of the UK. Call 01782 613773 to talk it through.
